The children peered hesitantly into the dank and dimly lit one-room flat. Old newspapers were stacked in a corner and plastic bags containing unnamed baubles were strewn across the floor. The flat was too small to fit all five children. One curious child piped innocently, “Why do they not have air-con?”

It was an eye-opening experience for these children in the August run of Camp@Home. A three day camp organised specially for our overseas Singaporean children, Camp@Home enriches them in our rich multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious heritage.

This August, Camp@Home brought a charity element with The Boys’ Brigade Share-a-Gift project to promote the spirit of caring and sharing.

The Boys’ Brigade Share-a-Gift project is a national community service project organised by The Boys' Brigade in Singapore annually. Every Christmas, they collect food and necessities to bring joy to needy families in Singapore.

On a hot and sunny Wednesday afternoon, the Camp@Home children gathered at the Boys’ Brigade campus where they were divided themselves into groups to pack the hampers. Each hamper contained groceries like cooking oil, soya sauce, instant coffee, canned beans, and rice which would last an average household for a month.

During their visit to deliver the food hampers, the children were a little hesitant and distant to the unfamiliar faces. As they worked through the different flats, the warm welcome from the elderly encouraged them to open up.

“We gave hampers to them because we want to help the less fortunate. Helping people makes me feel happy,” said Grace, 12, a Camp@Home participant from Taiwan.

“The children may not fully understand what they are doing right now. We hope that this hands-on experience will help mould them into a person who is compassionate and thoughtful in their growing up years,” shared Mr Frederick Kwan, Assistant Manager of The Boys’ Brigade.

The Boys’ Brigade Share-a-Gift reaches out to approximately 7,744 households who are receiving assistance from Government-funded ComCare programmes and from 222 Voluntary Welfare Organisations.
