ohmy.gif We have around 25,500 members registered here, but I only see about one dozen of us who are really active and chatting on a day to day basis. Just wonder what the others are doing? unsure.gif

Probably like me, we have kids to mind.
Plus, busy with "integration examinations" Yes, those living in NL will know this tongue.gif
not very pleasant, I assure you (speaking for myself)

San,

Or are you the only male inside that portal?

Nope, there are 2 others as far as I know. Maybe more now, but I suspect not, otherwise Sis Amy (who is very active in the forums) would have mentioned it to me. Why don't you join? wink.gif You can call yourself "Steffie"!!

I would also like to mention the group Singaporean Women Abroad (SWA), which has its own forums rather like this portal, and also has a Facebook group. Their aim is to connect Singaporean women all over the world, but membership is not restricted to women, there are also a few male memebrs, of which I am one!

San - thank you for creating the politically independent link (despite the lack of a Government funding ... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif ) on FB. Singaporeans in US are fine, esp when we just be made aware that there are no Singapore mission offices in Canada and the nearest one is in New York or San Francisco. UK also ok smile.gif smile.gif Hope we can connect cyber-ically (if that word made any sense at all ... hahahahaha) and thank you so much for the links.

Thanks to Fern - I found the Singaporean International and have given my two-cents worth of ramblings in one of the discussion thread ... tongue.gif

Riza - you've got mail!!! Baca, jangan tak baca ....

Sha - Happy packing! Hope the move is a smooth one. Hope we can become friends and can look you up whenever I need to visit the Singapore mission office in NYC ... biggrin.gif

This portal did have its uses in the past, it was through it that I made many friends like Fern, Riza and Sha, and gave me the impetus to form my own meetup groups. Our Facebook group Singaporeans in UK has now over 1100 members, and Singaporean International has also exceeded the 1000+ mark. The Overseas Singaporean Unit (Government funded!! wink.gif ) has its own club, the Overseas Singaporean Club, and people can sign up for that through this weblink http://www.overseassingaporean.sg/cms/inde.../portal/osclub/. Membership is free, and members get privileges and benefits in various cities around the world (Sydney, Melbourne, London, Beijing, Shanghai, NYC to name a few) and can participate in "Singapore Nights" held monthly in these cities. However, because only the OSU knows who is a member, there is no apparent networking outside the events they organise, and that is, I feel, a serious limitation of the Club, since most (but not all!) Singaporeans abroad are interested in meeting with others in an informal setting, especially over good food!

Oh dear ... not encouraging for a newbie like me. I was so looking forward to hook-up with fellow Singaporeans in Canada or the US (I'm in Alberta, Canada). I met a Malaysian family who is now residing in Colorado and was told that she knows of a few Singaporean families in Colorado. I was hoping to meet some Singaporeans from there.

If out of 25,500 members and only a dozen do not have the apathy syndrome, then this site is not serving its purpose. Is there any other portal/s that you can recommend, where overseas Singaporeans are more active. Maybe portals that are not managed by the PM office .... hehehehe.

Kind regards

Rohani

Welcome to the portal! In the midst of packing for a move to New York City after 11.5 years of living in Istanbul, Turkey! I'm reminded once again of just how much stuff we accumulate and having to choose which stuff is worth the time and energy and effort to pack up and take with you, puts the idea of clearing clutter into a slightly different perspective. rolleyes.gif

If you have a Facebook profile, there are a number of groups there that can serve your purposes. I run a far more modest attempt to link up Singaporeans all over the world (no Government funding so we are politically independent!) called Singaporean International (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=93479985772 ), which has at the moment 1,099 members. Fern is a member and also Rizawati in Denver, Colorado, who is very friendly and always very keen to meet fellow Singaporeans in North America, especially if they plan to visit Colorado.

New York Singapore Association (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2282945466) - rather far from Alberta, I know, but you did express an interest in meeting Singaporeans from all over the USA.

Singaporeans/Malaysians in USA (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19873907712)

Singaporeans in America (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=56365081143) - this is a new group so does not have many members at the moment (and also covers both American continents) but hopefully it will grow over time.

Singaporeans in Canada (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2224735131&ref=search&sid=586657547.2322052457..1)

Singaporeans Living in Vancouver (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2385185955&ref=search&sid=586657547.2322052457..1) - now this a lot nearer you!

Singaporean Vancouverites (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2429225969&ref=search&sid=586657547.2297335764..1)

I hope you will find these links useful.

Thanks for the links!

I guess many simply got tired and bored of having sales ads literally shoved onto their eyeballs blink.gif no matter which thread they were checking. Moderators sleep - members leave. sad.gif

There's another one here. smile.gif

Not a big fan of forums. Or online stuff. Only come occasionally to see if anyone needs some help or if I need some advice. Oh yes, and do some spring cleaning if there are spam post in one of the forum I accidentally become the administrator of. Do my little bit for this OSP.

Yikes, my first time logging in after registering more than 5 months ago...and I see this topic... aiyo...

Perhaps everyone else is just familiarizing themselves with the new cities they're in...

hahah Uncle San,

Can't blame them for bo hiew and bo chup. This portal is practically useless, even for scolding garment...

No wait.. it IS useful. We can put up posts here advertising the products we sell biggrin.gif

Singaporeans are very used to spoonfeeding and a top down approach. The moment we, the underlings become more assertive, the garment people will become very defensive.

I am still waiting for this website to be upgraded. Maybe the rumours I hear about this upgrade would remain... well.. rumours.

heheheh

I think it can be summarised in one word - apathy.

Probably they are in invisible and after browsing, they cant bother to log in anymore, as like many of the guys in here in China shenzhen. Some get to know the guys here and then they cant bother.

Many of the newbies who come to work or station here in China or shenzhen for the first few years will probablyb party like ######. eg going karaokes, discos, pubs and restaurants, golfing or pursuit other entertainments becoz it is so much cheaper than in Sgs, some of them have mistress in their early twenties or younger.

I have a lady fren, shes is getting paid very well here in terms of China pay which enables her to live like a very well off person in SG, but when converted the pay to sg, she is only one of the many middle management workers in Sg, But here she lives in a nice condominium, takes taxi to work everyday and goes horse riding in DG every weekend as she has bought a horse there and rubbing shoulders with the rich chinese that she dun bother to know more Sg frens.

Most Sgs or about 90% of Sgs who come to china to work on Sg or international company payroll dun want to go back to Sg after working here. For young men, they would probably end up with chinese girl fren or wife or many lady frens and enjoying so much that they dun want to go back to SG.

This is the situation here in China .. so busying working, partying to late nites..that u dun see them in OSP here. laugh.gif..

But for Sgs in the other parts of the world? u gotta ask them...hahaahah laugh.gif
