Has the OSU been able to negotiate any discount deals such as accommodation or flights?

Is there going to be SG Day in Toronto?

That is a question only the Overseas Singaporean Unit can answer. As far as I know, the venue for 2009 hasn't been decided yet, but we are hoping it will be in London. So who knows? Toronto would be a great venue, it is one of my favourite cities for visits.

There seems to be a certain amount of confusion concerning what Singapore Day entails. This is a big annual event, sponsored by the Overseas Singaporean Unit, designed to showcase the best of Singapore, and to make it that much more attractive, a chosen group of hawkers are flown into the host city to demonstrate their culinary talents and to bring a genuine taste of home to the Singaporean community there. There will also be entertainment by Singapore artistes.

As you can imagine, this event will be extremely costly (although probably very worthwhile) so at the present moment, from what I can see, it is going to take place in one chosen city on an annual basis, going round the world to cities where there are significant numbers of Singaporeans. Last year it was in New York, this year in Melbourne, next year who knows? We have certainly indicated to the OSU our enthusiasm and backing for the event to be hosted in London in 2009, since there are over 40,000 Singaporeans in the UK (an estimated 10,000 in London alone) and another 5,000 or so in neighbouring countries such as Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, all within easy access of London.

So this is no small-scale local event, to be hosted by the Singapore Embassy or High Commission for a few hundred people, but a large-scale and very grand happening involving thousands (I believe the attendance figure for New York was around 7,000), which probably requires at least a year's planning in advance, and a big team on the ground to help in the organisation and running of the show. This is a chance for local Singaporeans to get involved and meet others in your part of the world. In the USA, our compatriots in Washington and Boston were very active in chartering coaches and accommodation for fellow Singaporeans for the trip to New York, and if it comes to London, I can envisage ourselves doing the same for people from Scotland, North and Central England, where there are many Singaporeans, and of course, co-operating with local Singapore clubs in various European countries to ensure that this will be a European affair, and not just Britain!
